Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about garage door repair, installation, scheduling and safety. Don't see your question? Call (847) 841-0279.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Shoreline Door Systems is a registered Illinois company and is fully insured. When our technicians work on your property, you're protected. If a project in your town requires a permit or contractor registration, we'll let you know and take care of it before any work begins.

What areas do you serve for garage door installation and repair?

Shoreline Door Systems provides residential garage door installation, repair, and service across Chicago's North Shore and the north side of the city. Our service area includes Evanston, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Deerfield, Northbrook, Northfield, Glenview, Skokie, Lincolnwood, and Morton Grove, as well as the Chicago neighborhoods of Lincoln Park, Lakeview, and Roscoe Village. Not sure if you're in our area? Call us at (847) 841-0279 or email service@shorelinedoor.com and we'll let you know right away.

What types of garage door repairs do you handle?

We handle the full range of residential garage door repairs, including broken torsion and extension springs, frayed or snapped cables, worn or broken rollers, bent tracks, doors that have come off track, damaged hinges and brackets, and opener problems. We also tune up doors that are noisy, slow, or moving unevenly.

If your door isn't working the way it should, our technician will diagnose the problem, explain what's going on in plain terms, and recommend the right fix.

Do you offer free estimates?

Because every door and every problem is different, we start with a service visit. A technician inspects the door and the opener and identifies exactly what's wrong. Before any repair begins, we explain what needs to be done and what it will cost. There are no surprise charges and no work without your approval.

My garage door spring broke. Can I fix it myself?

We strongly recommend against it. Garage door springs hold an enormous amount of tension, enough to lift a door that can weigh several hundred pounds. Trying to adjust, unwind, or replace a spring without the proper tools and training can cause serious injury.

If you suspect a broken spring, don't try to open the door by hand or with the opener. Leave it closed, keep people and pets away from it, and give us a call. Common signs of a broken spring include a loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the spring above the door, or a door that feels extremely heavy or only lifts a few inches.

What are the signs my garage door needs service?

Many problems give warning signs before the door fails completely. Watch for grinding, squeaking, or popping noises; a door that moves unevenly or sits crooked when closed; a door that reverses before it reaches the ground; slow or jerky movement; visible gaps or wear in springs and cables; or an opener that struggles or runs without moving the door.

Catching these early is usually faster and less expensive than waiting until the door stops working.

My garage door won't close. What should I check first?

Before calling, check a few common causes. Make sure nothing is blocking the door's path, and that the two safety sensors near the bottom of the tracks are clean, aligned, and showing their indicator lights. Confirm the opener is plugged in and has power, and check whether the lock or vacation button on your wall control is turned on.

If none of that solves it, or if you see a broken spring, loose cable, or a door that's off track, stop using the door and call us at (847) 841-0279.

Do you work on garage door openers?

Yes. We diagnose and repair garage door openers, including problems with remotes and keypads, safety sensors, wall controls, limit settings, and worn drive components. If your opener is older or no longer reliable, we'll give you an honest assessment of whether it's worth repairing.

Which garage door and opener brands do you service?

We service most major residential garage door and opener brands. If you're unsure whether we can work on your door, give us the brand or a photo of the label on your door or opener and we'll let you know.

Do you install new garage doors?

Yes. Shoreline Door Systems installs new residential garage doors in addition to repair and service. Whether you're replacing a worn-out door, upgrading the look of your home, or adding better insulation, we'll help you choose the right door for your home, style, and budget.

Our process starts with a visit to measure your opening and talk through styles, materials, colors, windows, and insulation options. Once you've chosen your door, we schedule the installation, remove and haul away your old door, and leave you with a new door that's properly balanced, tested, and ready to use.

Should I repair my garage door or replace it?

It depends on the age and condition of the door. Many problems, like broken springs, cables, rollers, or opener issues, are routine repairs that can keep a door running well for years. Replacement often makes more sense when the door panels are badly damaged, rusted, or rotting, when repairs are becoming frequent, or when you want better insulation, quieter operation, or a new look for your home.

Our technician will give you an honest recommendation. If a repair is the right call, we'll tell you.

How do I schedule a new garage door installation?

Call Shoreline Door Systems at (847) 841-0279 or email service@shorelinedoor.com and let us know you're interested in a new door. We'll set up a time to visit, measure your opening, and walk you through your options. If you have a style in mind or photos of doors you like, send them along. It helps us get started.

How quickly can you come out?

In most cases, we can come out the same day. Call us during business hours and we'll get a technician to you as quickly as possible, with priority for urgent problems like a door stuck open, a car trapped in the garage, or a door that won't secure your home.

Do you offer 24-hour emergency service?

We are not a 24-hour service. Our hours are Monday through Saturday, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and we're closed on Sundays. If you have an urgent problem, call us during business hours. In most cases we can come out the same day. If you reach us after hours, leave a message or email service@shorelinedoor.com and we'll respond first thing the next business day.

How often should my garage door be serviced?

Most homeowners should have their garage door inspected and tuned up about once a year. A routine service visit typically includes checking spring tension and balance, inspecting cables, rollers, and hinges, lubricating moving parts, tightening hardware, and testing the opener's safety features. Regular maintenance helps your door run quietly, last longer, and avoid unexpected breakdowns, especially through Chicago winters.

Do I need to be home during the appointment?

In most cases, yes. We'd like someone to be home so our technician can access the garage, test the opener and remotes, and walk you through what we found and what we recommend before any work begins.
