Off-track door & cable repair
Doors that have jumped their track, snapped or frayed cables, worn rollers and bent track sections — put right and re-aligned so it doesn't recur.
A door hanging crooked in its opening is the repair people most often try to fix themselves, and the one where that goes worst. The door looks like it just needs lifting back into place. What's actually happening is that several hundred pounds is being held by a system that's now loaded unevenly, and moving it by hand can bring the whole thing down.
If your door is off track right now: don't run the opener, don't try to straighten it, and keep cars and people out from underneath it. Call (847) 841-0279 — we move these ahead of scheduled work.
Why it happened
What puts a door off its track
Something hit it
A car bumper is the classic. Even a light tap while reversing can pop rollers out of the track on one side.
A cable broke or came off the drum
With one side unsupported, the door goes crooked immediately. This is the most common mechanical cause.
Worn or seized rollers
Rollers with worn bearings bind rather than roll, and eventually climb out of the track on a fast cycle.
Bent or loose track
Track that has been knocked, or brackets that have worked loose over years of vibration, gives the rollers somewhere to escape.
Debris in the track
Gravel, a stray bolt, or ice built up in the track after a Chicago freeze-thaw cycle.
The building moved
On older detached garages the frame itself settles, and a door that ran fine for thirty years starts binding.
The repair
What we do
Secure the door first. Before anything else we clamp the door so it can't drop while we work. This is the step that gets skipped in DIY attempts.
Release the tension safely. Depending on where the door is sitting, the springs may need winding down before the door can be moved at all.
Find the cause, not just the symptom. Re-seating a door that came off because of a worn roller just means it comes off again in a month. We replace what caused it.
Re-set cables and drums. Cables get re-run and tensioned evenly so the door sits square in the opening.
Straighten or replace track. Minor bends can be worked out; a badly kinked section gets replaced.
Re-balance and test. Door disconnected from the opener, lifted by hand, checked that it holds at waist height, then the safety reverse tested.
Cables specifically
Frayed and snapped lift cables
The lift cables run from the bottom bracket of the door up to drums on the torsion shaft. They carry the door's weight, and they wear — particularly at the bottom bracket, where moisture from a wet garage floor and road salt gets at them.
A fraying cable looks like a wire brush: individual strands standing proud of the twist. Catch it at that stage and it's a straightforward replacement. Leave it and it snaps, usually mid-cycle, and the door goes crooked in a second.
We replace cables in pairs for the same reason we replace springs in pairs: they've done the same work, and the second one is rarely far behind.
Common questions
Off-track repair, answered
My door is off track. Can I push it back myself?
Please don't. A door off its track has an unpredictable load on the cables and springs, and pushing it can cause the whole thing to come down. It's also how people lose fingers. Leave it, keep cars and people out from under it, and call.
What knocks a door off its track?
Most often a car bumper, a broken cable, worn rollers that finally jumped, a bent track section, or debris in the track. On older detached garages around Evanston we also see doors come off because the frame itself has shifted.
How much does off-track repair cost?
It depends on whether it's a simple re-seat or whether cables, rollers or a section of track also need replacing. We diagnose it first and give you the price before any work begins. If the door panel itself is bent, we'll tell you that before doing anything.
My cable snapped on one side. Is that urgent?
Yes. With one cable gone the door is being held by one side only and can twist or fall. Stop using it entirely and call — this is one we move to the front of the day.
Get it sorted
Door hanging crooked?
Leave it where it is and call. We'll secure it properly and find what caused it rather than just pushing it back.
